Sessions and brainstorming

Risk sessions let you run collaborative brainstorming with your team, stakeholders, or external partners. Participants join through a shared link and PIN, suggest risks in real time, upvote each other's ideas, and you import the best ones into your project's risk register.

What is a risk session?

A risk session is a live, interactive workspace attached to a project. It is designed for workshops where multiple people identify risks together. Participants do not need a Risk Companion account. They join with a link and a four-digit PIN.

Sessions run in real time. Ideas appear for everyone as they are submitted, and updates are pushed instantly using live broadcasting. The session facilitator (the person who created it) controls the session status and manages the import process.

Creating a session

  1. 1
    Open your project

Navigate to the project where you want to run the session.

  2. 2
    Click Start a risk session

A dialog asks you to describe the purpose of the session. This description is visible to all participants.

  3. 3
    Share the session

After creation, Risk Companion displays a shareable link, a four-digit PIN, and a QR code. Send the link or display the QR code so participants can join.

Joining a session

Participants open the shared link or scan the QR code. They enter the four-digit PIN and their name, then join the session. No account is required.

The participant list updates in real time. The facilitator can see who is currently active in the session.

Collecting and upvoting ideas

Once inside the session, any participant can submit a risk idea by typing a title and clicking Add risk to session. The idea appears on everyone's screen immediately.

Participants can upvote ideas they consider important. Each person can upvote an idea once. The vote count helps the facilitator prioritise which ideas to import.

Keep idea titles short and specific. You can add causes, effects, and measures after importing the idea as a risk.

Importing ideas into the risk register

When brainstorming is complete, the facilitator converts selected ideas into risks. Only the facilitator can perform this step.

  1. 1
    Click Import risks to project

This opens the idea overview with all submitted ideas and their vote counts.

  2. 2
    Select ideas to import

Check the ideas you want to keep. For each selected idea, you can assign an owner, category, and tags before import.

  3. 3
    Confirm import

Imported ideas become draft risks in the project's risk register. You can then add assessments, causes, effects, and measures as needed.

Managing the session

The facilitator has a Manage session panel with controls to end or re-open the session.

  • End session closes the session so no new ideas can be submitted. Existing ideas remain visible.
  • Re-open session re-activates a closed session if you need to collect more ideas.

You can import ideas at any time, whether the session is active or closed.
