Current vs target assessments

Risk Companion tracks two assessment states for every risk so you can measure where you are against where you want to be. The gap between them drives your progress metrics.

Two assessment types

Open any risk and navigate to the Assessment tab. You will see four tabs: Current, Target, Gap Analysis, and History.

Current (as-is)

Reflects the present state of the risk with existing measures in place. Update this assessment whenever conditions change or new information surfaces.

Example

Probability: 60%

Financial Impact: $350,000

EMV: $210,000

Target (to-be)

Represents the desired future state after planned mitigations are complete. Set targets based on realistic outcomes from your mitigation actions.

Example

Probability: 25%

Financial Impact: $150,000

EMV: $37,500

Gap analysis

Risk Companion calculates progress automatically using the Initial, Current, and Target assessments. The formula measures how far you have moved from the initial state toward the target.

Progress formula

Progress = (Initial - Current) / (Initial - Target) x 100%

Worked example

Initial EMV

$300,000

Current EMV

$210,000

Target EMV

$37,500

Progress: ($300,000 - $210,000) / ($300,000 - $37,500) x 100% = 34.3%

A progress value above 100% means you have exceeded your target. A negative value means the risk has worsened since the initial assessment.

Tracking progress over time

Every time you save a new current assessment, Risk Companion stores it in the History tab. This creates a timestamped audit trail that shows how the risk has evolved.

Example assessment history

DateProbabilityFinancialEMVNotes
Jan 1575%$400,000$300,000Initial assessment
Mar 165%$380,000$247,000After vendor audit
May 1560%$350,000$210,000New measures in place
Aug 140%$200,000$80,000Mitigation complete

Result: EMV reduced by $220,000 (73%) over 7 months through systematic mitigation.

Every assessment is timestamped and attributed for compliance and governance.
