BowTieXP is the more serious tool in its own domain and it is not a close call. It is a whole suite, spanning risk management, incident management and safety-critical controls, with its own certified e-Learning track, built for what its site calls complex operational environments. Barrier-based safety is the entire point of the product, and it carries the methodology depth and the certified training that go with that. Risk Companion has none of it and is not attempting it. If safety-critical control management is your problem, we are not the answer.

Wolters Kluwer positions that as rapid because the configuration is off the shelf and not custom development. That is a fair claim, and it is still a project with a team and a gate. - Is Risk Companion a good BowTieXP alternative?
- Usually not, and we would rather be straight about it. BowTieXP Suite is a barrier-based safety suite with named solutions for safety-critical controls and incident management. Risk Companion generates bowtie diagrams from a risk register to show where prevention or mitigation is missing. As a BowTieXP alternative it only makes sense if what you wanted was the diagram over a register, not the safety case behind it.
- When would someone pick Risk Companion instead?
- When the real problem is that risk management lives in a spreadsheet and nobody keeps it current. Teams pick us for a register the whole team maintains, interactive risk workshops, AI suggestions to get past a blank page, automated health checks, and bowtie diagrams as one view of a risk rather than a discipline in itself. That is a different need from a safety case.
- Does Risk Companion manage safety-critical controls?
- No. Bowtie in Risk Companion is a visualisation over your register: causes, the risk event, consequences, and the prevention and mitigation measures attached to each path. It is good at making gaps visible.
